Claude Cowork has no separate price. It's bundled into every paid Claude plan, and it's not on the free plan at all.

The one thing to understand about the tiers
You are not buying features. You are buying headroom.
Every paid tier runs the same models and the same Cowork. Max 5x and Max 20x do not unlock anything Pro lacks — they raise the ceiling on how much you can run before you're throttled.
So the question isn't "which tier has the feature I need," it's "how much will I actually run."
How the limits work
Two layers:
- A rolling five-hour session window. Your allowance refills continuously rather than resetting at midnight.
- Weekly caps on top, on paid plans.
The thing that surprises people: agentic runs burn allowance much faster than chat. A Cowork task is dozens of model calls, tool invocations and retries. Ten minutes of Cowork can cost what an hour of conversation does. Anthropic states plainly that Pro users hit limits earlier than Max users.
Which tier to actually buy
Pro (~$20) — a handful of agentic tasks a week. Document work, a weekly scheduled job, normal knowledge-work volume. This is the right starting point for almost everyone.
Max 5x (~$100) — you're in Cowork most working days and keep bumping the five-hour window mid-task. This is the tier people land on after a month of Pro.
Max 20x (~$200) — Cowork is how you work, not a tool you reach for.
Don't pre-buy Max. Start at Pro, and upgrade when you've actually felt the ceiling. You'll know within two weeks.
If you don't want to pay
ChatGPT Work is on every plan, including Free, in the macOS and Windows desktop app. (Web and mobile access needs Plus or above.) It's a different product with different strengths, but if the goal is "try an agentic desktop mode for nothing," that's the one that lets you.
There's no equivalent path with Cowork. Free doesn't include it and there's no trial.
What Pro actually gets you beyond the price
Worth knowing before you compare it to a $20 competitor — Cowork on Pro includes:
- Desktop app on macOS and Windows, plus web, iOS, Android and a Chrome side panel
- Local file access, local MCP connectors and browser use, via the desktop app
- Computer use (beta, Pro and Max)
- Scheduled and recurring tasks
- Cloud sessions that keep running with your laptop closed, and follow your account across devices
That's a lot for $20. The honest read on Claude's pricing is that the entry tier is well-specified and the upgrade path is purely about volume.
