Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT Work (2026): Which One Should You Use?
Short answer: use whichever one your subscription already includes. Both are bundled, both are good, and the overlap is large enough that paying twice is usually waste.
If you have both, the split is:
- Claude Cowork — work that touches your files, apps and browser.
- ChatGPT Work — work whose output is a finished document, spreadsheet, deck or small app.

How to open each one
Claude Cowork — open Claude on any supported platform, select Cowork in the message box, describe the outcome you want. Claude plans it, then executes with the steps visible.
ChatGPT Work — on web, flip the toggle at the top of the page to Work. On mobile, use the dropdown at the top. On desktop, pick ChatGPT from the top-left menu, then Work from the toggle.
Where each one actually wins
Cowork wins on reach into your own machine. Local file access, local MCP servers, browser use and computer use are real capabilities that ChatGPT Work does not have an equivalent for. One caveat worth knowing before you rely on it: local files only reach a web or mobile session if the desktop app is open on that computer and the session started there.
Cowork's escalation order is also the more conservative design — it prefers a connector, falls back to Chrome, and only drives system controls directly with explicit permission.
Work wins on finished output and SaaS breadth. The product is built around handing you an artifact, and the plugin directory covers mainstream business tools more thoroughly than Anthropic's connector set today. It's also the cheaper entry point: Work is on every plan on desktop, including Free. Cowork is not.
Things people get wrong
"Cowork is desktop-only." Not any more. It's on web, iOS, Android and a Chrome side panel. What's desktop-only is the local half — files, local connectors, browser and computer use.
"Neither works across devices." Both do now. Cowork sessions follow your account; ChatGPT cloud Work chats sync across web, mobile and desktop. Start on one, finish on another.
"Work is just Codex." Three different modes. Codex is for code, Work is for everything else, Chat is chat.
If you're deciding right now
- Already pay for Claude Pro or Max? Use Cowork. It's included.
- Already pay for ChatGPT Plus or above? Use Work. It's included — and on desktop it's on Free too.
- Pay for neither? Start with ChatGPT Work on the desktop app, because it costs nothing to try.
- Pay for both? Cowork for anything touching your machine, Work for anything producing a document.
One real gap in both: neither is reachable from iMessage, WhatsApp, or your team's Slack. To use either, you open their app. If that matters to you, that's the thing to go looking for — it's what we build at Agentastic, and it's the only claim we'll make here.

- Yes. Cowork is in beta on web and mobile for Pro, Max and Team plans. Sessions follow your account, so you can start on one device and continue on another. Local file access, local connectors, browser use and computer use still require the desktop app — and local files only reach a web or mobile session if the desktop app is open on that machine and the session was started there.
- Is ChatGPT Work the same as Codex?
- No. Chat, Work and Codex are three separate modes in the rebuilt ChatGPT desktop app. Codex is the developer coding mode. Work is the general agentic mode for multi-step knowledge work. The previous application was renamed ChatGPT Classic.
- Which one is better for long multi-step tasks?
- Both run for extended periods in the cloud and both support scheduling. ChatGPT Work is explicitly framed around long horizons and finished deliverables. Cowork is stronger when the task needs real access to your own files, applications and browser, because those capabilities live in its desktop app.
